12ft Skiff Report: Lane Cove Saturday 11th February

Scratch start for Club-championship heat. 9 starters.

Chaos at the start as the breeze swirled around the compass, all the fleet began drifting over the line as the breeze stopped. Spinnakers hoisted for the drift, Gemmell Sails slingshot out of the start in a squall, all crews scrambling to save capsize. Out to the Parramatta, very windy, all with the wrong rig on, Hey Charger retiring as skipper pulls a muscle in his abdomen and can’t continue. Just as quickly as it came, the breeze is gone again, and the afternoon turns into a long frustrating time of seeking out small puffs of wind. Lead alternates all day between LCC, Gemmell Sails and Skol.

3 hours later, in a strong run-out tide, almost becalmed and with 20 minutes to the time limit, LCC and Gemmell Sails, side by side, accept a tow home. Skol, 50m ahead say they are going to tough it out. They are the only boat to finish!
