3rd February Woollahra – Club Champ heat 4. LCC takes the win!

The fleet all put on 3rd rigs with the prospect of a fresh southerly. The breeze direction had more west in it than a typical southerly, and was shifting around all over the place. They were all a little under-powered most of the time with 3rd, though there were the odd puffs that had the 3rd rig inside out, especially the later parts of the race when the breeze went more true south. LCC looked the goods to win the start down at the pin end, till Variety ruined their plan, coming in hot to port tack the fleet. Both skiffs still managed to get away well, and immediately jumped clear of Garde and skiff.org.au who nearly got tangled on the line. LCC held a commanding lead at the first mark, which was laid just west of Point Piper. Variety 2nd, with Garde in 3rd, Skiff.org 4th and Citedel 5th. Variety capsized during the bear away. This allowed Garde and Skiff.org through for 2nd and 3rd. The gap from 1st to 2nd to 3rd of about 30 seconds remained the same on the long downwind run to the eastern channel YA mark, down near Watsons Bay. Up the next work, Garde closed the gap to LCC and got in front for a moment near the top mark, but both skiffs closed again and rounded the mark simultaneously. Skiff.org.au remained 30 seconds in arrears, while Variety were further back in 4th after another swim. LCC and Garde went toe to toe down the second run, LCC rounding the bottom mark just inside of Garde. Up the final beat, Garde worked away to a small lead, until LCC placed themselves better when the breeze shifted to the south, both boats neck and neck again, about mid work. Garde again got away again and round the top mark about 30 seconds ahead. LCC played the short and hairy downwind run to the finish better than Garde, and when the latter boat did a short jibe to avoid some traffic they over shot the finish line. LCC came home with the win, with skiff.org in 3rd, Variety 4th and citadel 5th.
