Back at the Sydney Flying Squadron after 4 years and still on the harbour, on our same, original courses, all different and all the same.
Day 1 on Saturday, so we might associate with the Historical 18’s for the return of the 12’s (missing the Lane Cove Club Championship heat 1).
Soft breeze, but the skiffs all flighty, imagining stronger breezes coming due to the heat of the day, so everyone chose (the wrong) second rig. North Easterly, start off Clark Island, 2 times to Beashel Buoy then the Gas buoy off Nielsen Park.
3 Starters today, Lincoln Crowne & Company, Garde and TBA (ex Variety) a bit early in the season for some of the other boats to be ready.
First work up the west shore the 3 boats absolutely neck and neck and no difference in boat-speed. Garde dug in deeper to the east off Nielsen Park earlier and gained 50m and that set up the rest of the day. Lincoln Crowne and Company and TBA together, trailing Garde by a small margin.
Down the run around Sharke Island to the bottom mark at Clark Island, this was the order and the margin. Second work, Garde pulled away a little early, and then the others came back to the 50 m gap. TBA capsized in a tack off Nielsen Park, giving a similar gap to 3rd place.
Down the square run to Clark Island., Garde went all the way west to Taylor Bay, with Lincoln Crowne & Company down the middle, closing the gap with a better lay to the bottom mark. At the mark starters had an S-flag, shortening the course to the finish boat at Clark Island, to see Garde win by 1minute from Lincoln Crowne & Company and TBA a further minute back.
