Sunday 11th, Port Jackson Championship, run as the Variety Sprint Series. 4- 20 minute sprint races from Woolahra.
Forecast 10 to 12 knot Easterly saw the fleet of 15 all choose big sail, other than Gizmo whose big-rig was broken.
1st heat, Lincoln Crowne buried in the start, away from the line in mid to back end of fleet. Hard left on the work, and a log-jam at the top mark saw some early successes like D-unit, Di-Polar, Skol, held out, (Garde unable to round the mark on the first try) with LCC back to 3rd, behind Garde and Gemmell Sails.
This order maintained through the race, finishing this way.
Heat 2, LCC at pin-end to start, away well, Garde, Gemmell Di-Polar, D-unit (nee Variety) all going left. LCC 2nd at top mark, behind Garde, with the whole fleet packed close. Tussled like this for the rest of the heat, finishing Gemmell, Garde, LCC, D-Unit.
Heat 3, all after the Pin, LCC, toward the pin-end, up the work in the bunch. A bunch including LCC did not go far enough north on the first tack, and saw boats out to the North come over the top, getting to the top mark in about 7th, Gemmell Sails similarly buried in 5th, Garde well clear in the lead. LCC and Gemmell picked off a couple of boats on the run, to finish 3rd and 4th, behind Garde, with Vantage Real Estate in 2nd.
Heat 4, aiming for Pin end start, up left, LCC and Garde tacked back, Gemmell Sails lifted, called both on starboard, tacking LCC & Garde back to North, Gemmell tacked east, and gained an 80m lead in the 2 tacks, that they held for the race. LCC passed Garde on the run, to round 2nd with a tidy gap. Garde went up the middle and got a big wind-shift, getting them to the last mark ahed of LCC, to the finish, Gemmell Sails, Garde and LCC.
A great group of short races, good sailing, and great to have the support of Variety. Gemmell Sails 1st, Garde then LCC.
