Saturday at Lane Cove, the first race of the season: 18 knot S/easterly forecast to die.
With a Handicap start, LCC & Gemmell Sails waited after everyone had gone to start on scratch, and tried to reel everybody in.
Puffy in the river (as usual, especially in a S/easter) LCC & Gemmell Sails with big-rig, some of the fleet opted for 2nd rig, assuming the breeze to be stronger (or suffering from winter-break nerves).
Gemmell parked up in bad wind in Humbug, at the entry to Parramatta River, giving a big gap to LCC, which the boys held onto all the way to Goat Island and then the spinnaker run into Kerosene Bay. Here LCC lost the wind, with Gemmell Sails decimating the margin between the two. Both boats were moving through the fleet, chasing the first starters.
4 times to the top mark at Goat Island, 3 times under spinnaker to Kerosene Bay, saw the gap between LCC and Gemmell Sails constantly changing. The last time to the bottom mark LCC got the better of the breeze and opened what looked like a winning gap to Gemmell, still some way behind the final 2 boats still away ahead. Back toward the entry to the Lane Cove River, LCC passed the last 2 12 s and moved into lead on scratch. Into the river, LCC again lost the fickle breeze, and parked while Vantage Real-Estate & Gemmell Sails came up to them. But LCC was able to sneak into the river on a slant of breeze, and went on to take the win, fastest time in the first race of the season, with Gemmell Sails 3rd.
A lovely first day back.
Next week opening race at Woollahra, Harbour Marathon.
