Woollahra Sunday 18.11.12

Cracking North-easter, over 20 knots, with run-out tide against the wind promising some great action.
On the beach deciding on 3rd rig or reduced sail, Garde went the full 3rd sail, Lincoln Crowne & Company decided on the new (unused) smaller 4th main on 3rd rig.
Out to the start, crew of LCC concerned that they might be under-powered. At the start line the breeze was 23-26 knots, relief on LCC, plenty of power.
Away on N-east course to Beashel Bouy LCC very fast out of the start, higher & faster than the overpowered Garde, to lead by 150ms at the top mark. Set spinnaker & powered down the run, very bumpy. Noise on the boat off Nielsen Park, boat became very hard to steer, concerned LCC might have broken the fin. LCC did an awful gybe leading to a wineglass: in the process of getting this out handing the lead to Garde, and finding that a backstay had broken, meaning the race was over for LCC. Garde went on unchallenged, (other than a spectacular cartwheel capsize down a wave), Variety having also retired with broken rigging, and Citadel withdrawing due to the wild conditions.
